Nikola Corporation today launched the European version of its Class 8 battery electric truck, the Tre, in Europe in conjunction with its transport partner IVECO. Nikola will officially accept orders for the all-electric, zero-emission Tre semi-trailer starting today.
Nikola and IVECO announced today at the IAA Transportation 2022 event in Hannover, Germany that the European 4×2 Arctic version of the Tre BEV is officially available for ordering. It has nine batteries for a total energy storage of 738 kWh, giving the vehicle a range of 530 kilometers, or about 329 miles. The truck also has 480 kW of continuous power for the FPT Industrial e-Axle, Nikola said, giving the vehicle enough torque and power to handle the most grueling hub-to-hub deliveries in a regional setting.
During the company’s second quarter results, Nikola said in its Shareholder Deck that it had started a joint venture with IVECO that included engineering and production development. He also mentioned that Nikola and IVECO plan to start production of the Tre BEV in Europe in the second half of 2023. With orders just placed, this gives Nikola about a year to start production of the Tre BEV for the market. European.
Nikola’s recently appointed chairman, Michael Lohscheller, commented on the development:
“Nikola Tre’s zero-emission battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks are truly a game-changer in the commercial trucking industry. Specifically developed as electric vehicles, they offer performance and a driving experience capable of rivaling their diesel-powered counterparts in the toughest missions. They offer operationally and financially viable zero-emission solutions for regional applications and long-haul transport that will give customers a real competitive advantage.
IVECO Group Truck Business Unit President Luca Sra also commented on the announcement of the opening of the Tre BEV order book:
“Today we are making history with the first products for the European market from IVECO’s strong partnership with Nikola Corporation. Together, our teams have designed a modular platform capable of hosting both fuel cell and battery propulsion technologies, starting with the European 4×2 Artic version of the Nikola Tre BEV heavy truck making its debut. here today. It is the first-ever electric-driven modular platform for articulated heavy-duty tractors to house both power sources: battery electric for missions of around 500 km and fuel cell electric powertrain for towing up to 800 km in its first generation. A real revolution that marks a tangible step towards our ambitious goal of achieving zero-emission transport.
The Tre is by no means a new vehicle in the global automotive market, as Nikola began production and deliveries of the semi-trailer in the United States earlier this year. In the second quarter, Nikola built 50 Tre BEVs at its factory in Coolidge, Arizona, delivering 48 such units.
Nikola has made a dramatic turnaround from just a year ago. After taking on new leadership in his CEO roles and shuffling various other positions, Nikola kicked off production and deliveries of the Tre this year, which is probably more than anyone thought the company would be capable of.
