Saudi Arabia – Sabic, a global leader in the chemical industry, has unveiled BlueHero, an expanding ecosystem of materials, solutions, expertise and programs aimed at accelerating the energy transition to electricity.
The company’s starting point with BlueHero is supporting the automotive industry’s mission to create better, safer and more efficient electric vehicles (EVs), with a focus on improving the structural components of the battery with unique flame retardant materials and solution development expertise.
The automotive industry is leading the charge in moving towards new, more sustainable mobility systems. This includes a major move towards battery-powered electric vehicles, which can convert more than 77% of electricity into motion, compared to just 12-30% for vehicles with internal combustion engines.
In addition to these high performances, electric vehicles emit no exhaust pollutants and are generally responsible for a significantly lower amount of greenhouse gas emissions during their operation, which allows important contributions to the achievement of global climate change goals.
“With our BlueHero strategic initiative, we have made a strong commitment to invest, develop and deliver hardware solutions that can support the transition to electric power, reduce emissions and help fight climate change,” said Abdulrahman Al- Fageeh, Sabic’s executive vice president for Petrochemicals.
“Our decision to focus initially on automotive reflects the urgency of progress in this area and the strengths we already have with established materials and capabilities that can enable us to support the shift to electric vehicles and contribute to a low-carbon future. With BlueHero, in line with our goal to deliver “chemistry that matters” and shape a more sustainable future, we are strengthening our position to develop and deliver impactful solutions that industry needs to bring us closer collectively and heroically growing a clean air economy.”
Sabic provides cost-effective and technologically advanced thermoplastics – which can offer significant advantages over conventional materials (metals) – to help the automotive industry further improve the performance of electric vehicles. For example, the use of plastics in electric vehicle battery, electrical and charging components can provide multiple benefits: reduced weight and system complexity, extended range, extended design freedom, streamlined manufacturing, recyclability and improved thermal management and occupant safety.
Sabic’s new BlueHero electrification initiative also leverages specific knowledge and expertise in large part molding, compression molding, advanced injection molding and polymer flame interaction to help customers offer solutions that can meet critical requirements and enable efficient production.
The company plans to strengthen and expand its thermoplastics offering to enable electrification with a focus on new investments that will become available as part of BlueHero.
“The transition from internal combustion engine-based vehicles to electric propulsion is not a simple, linear process,” said Abdullah S. Al-Otaibi, Managing Director, ETP & Market Solutions, Sabic.
“In fact, a successful transition will require a willingness to forego many traditional materials and deeply rooted design, engineering and manufacturing methods. Through the BlueHero initiative, our team follows a holistic systems engineering approach in working with industry, enabling customers to more effectively optimize EV battery systems using thermoplastics.
An integral part of Sabic’s BlueHero ecosystem is its global team of engineers, researchers and scientists. This team leverages its established and growing expertise in design, testing and data generation for electric vehicle batteries and related applications to solve problems and overcome current limitations. As part of its work, the team collaborates with customers, development partners and other players in the value chain, from OEMs and third parties to tooling suppliers and testing agencies.
With promising opportunities for the world to use electric technologies, Sabic plans to expand the focus and scope of its BlueHero initiative to help support efforts in other sectors. These could potentially include energy storage, charging infrastructure, other modes of transportation, and industrial and consumer equipment.
