2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV confirmed at $30,000 for 250-mile base model

Earlier this year, GM announced a tempting $30,000 price tag for its 2024 Chevy Equinox EV all-electric compact crossover, slated for fall 2023.

On Thursday, GM confirmed that it plans to stick to that initial price and schedule, and it revealed plenty more about this upcoming EV. It will be sold in the Chevy lineup along with the gas-powered Equinox, which is a completely different vehicle.

But GM has made it clear that the Equinox EV is not a niche product.

“We are at a crossroads where electric vehicles will be the dominant choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead that charge for us,” CEO Mary Barra said in a press release.

Base price of $30,000 excludes any incentives. By the time it arrives, it will likely be eligible for a portion of the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit, though the IRS has not yet released details.

Equinox EV production is expected to begin in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico in the fourth quarter of 2023. The first release next fall will be a limited-edition 2RS version, one of the best-equipped in the lineup. This version will cost significantly more, but in the first year, Chevy says it will produce all trim levels.

In the interest of increasing volume and shared components, the Equinox EV overlaps in various ways with the sportier Blazer EV. And in the interest of aerodynamics and range, Chevy also managed to include flush door handles in the Equinox EV. Although exact dimensions have yet to be released, Chevy has confirmed that the Blazer EV is nearly three inches wider, just over two inches longer and about an inch taller than the Equinox EV. That puts the Equinox EV at around 190 inches long, 74 inches wide and 66 inches tall.

For those expecting something smaller and closer to the Bolt EV, which got a price drop for 2023 to make room for the Equinox EV, this isn’t it. While GM has hinted that a smaller Ultium-based Bolt EV replacement is in the works, don’t expect that for a few years.

Some of the drive units and batteries are shared with the Blazer EV, depending on which version you get. GM estimates 210 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque for the front-wheel-drive model, while all-wheel-drive versions make a combined total of 290 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque. GM says it will include a one-pedal drive mode that brings the vehicle to a complete stop with just the throttle.

GM has yet to reveal the battery capacities of the Equinox EV, but there will be two packs. The larger of the Blazer packs that allows for its 320-mile range wouldn’t match the Equinox’s shorter wheelbase, Chevy officials said. The smallest package offered on Equinox EV 1LT front-drive models has an estimated range of 250 miles. Front-wheel-drive versions with the largest pack return 300 miles of range, while all-wheel-drive versions with the largest pack return 280 miles on a charge. All Equinox EV versions use GM’s full-size pocket cells that are part of its Ultium propulsion toolkit.

The Equinox EV will be capable of 150kW DC fast charging with a CCS format connector. This adds 70 miles of range in just 10 minutes, according to GM. It will also include an 11.5 kW AC on-board charger as standard, allowing up to 34 miles of range per hour, GM estimates. A 19.2 kW configuration – like what GM has asked its dealers to install on the charging side – is available on the top 3RS AWD trim, adding up to 51 miles per hour. GM says the battery will be covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.

According to Chevrolet vice president of marketing Steve Majoros, the brand knows that people who have never owned an electric vehicle before want autonomy. However, for those who have owned an EV, accessibility and charging speed become priorities. The choices therefore aim to reconcile the two.

Chevy hasn’t yet detailed specs by trim level, but it says the top-spec LT and RS trims will offer “two distinct personalities.” LT versions will be available with a two-tone white roof, while the RS will be offered with a black roof. Both of these trims will offer footwell lighting, and up to 21-inch wheels will complement proportions nearly as low and racy as the Blazer EV.

Inside, Chevy says there’s room for five, with up to 57.0 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. An 11.0-inch gauge screen sits in front of the driver in every trim, while higher trims have a 17.7-inch touchscreen in the middle that provides an “edge-to-edge” experience. As we noted earlier, this is more of a cockpit layout and less of the open, airy look we’ve seen in other dedicated EV rig designs.

Chevrolet includes a long list of active safety features in the Equinox EV. Front and rear automatic emergency braking, active lane control and blind spot monitors are all included. Heated front and rear outboard seats and heated wipers will be among the features. Hands-free Super Cruise driver assistance will be available on the Equinox EV, as will adaptive cruise control, a high-definition surround-view camera system, head-up display and rear camera mirror.

The Equinox will also be offered to fleet customers, in a commercial variant which remains to be detailed.
