One of the biggest stories of the week is a sea change in the way one of America’s biggest automakers sells cars, starting with electric vehicles. With new rules for its dealerships announced this week, which will go into effect in January 2024, Ford is ending haggling and markups on electric vehicles. Dealers looking to sell electric vehicles can choose between two tiers, but both require non-negotiable pricing.

Automakers say electric vehicles are being shown to the general public, and yet at the Detroit auto show, which was once the epicenter of U.S. automaker announcements, there were no new revelations about electric vehicles. Jeep has however announced an expansion of its 4xe plug-in hybrid family, not yet with new models, but with a rugged base model 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe and a special edition 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary. PHEV which, in the Grand Cherokee, offers up to 25 all-electric miles according to Jeep.

The 2023 Honda CR-V hybrid earns 40 mpg, the automaker confirmed this week, with the addition of a front-drive hybrid version. In pricing announced at the same time, the automaker pitched the Hybrid as a premium version that it hopes will account for 50 percent of CR-V sales.

Will the $25,000 Tesla arrive? While comments from Tesla’s head of investor relations earlier this week seemed to once again put the brakes on that possibility, they do suggest that Tesla needs more affordable models in its lineup.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E EV and Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid are among the first vehicles to receive the updated version of Ford’s Bluecruise driver assistance system, called Activeglide in the Lincoln, which performs automated lane changes .

Volkswagen has unveiled a rugged, all-terrain ID.4 concept. With more power, off-road wheels and the suggestion that there’s real capability beyond those rugged appearances, VW could gauge a production model’s response or, perhaps, plan ahead. how its MEB platform could work for future Scout EV models.

Nissan has approved a two-way charger that works with the Leaf, while preserving its factory warranty. The unit that is approved is the first that can help deliver power to the grid, Nissan says, although Ford has beaten Nissan with a system that can disconnect from the grid during brownouts and provide power to the home. And Nissan Leaf EV batteries last a long time, according to the automaker, which could push the mass reuse and recycling of batteries further into the future.

Sales of electric vehicles are disproportionately low in communities of color, even though they are often the hardest hit by transportation-related air pollution. According to a new study, it’s not due to a lack of interest in electric vehicles. Barriers to charging, EV education and how incentives are structured all play a role, he suggests.
