2022 Volvo S90 T8 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid Registration – Indo-Canadian Voice

Auto review by Veeno Dewan

For 2022, Volvo’s ‘Recharge’ name is coming to the Swedish company’s lineup, representing a strategy to put at least one million Volvo electrified vehicles on the road by 2025. The moniker ‘The Recharge’ means either battery-powered, fully electric (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

For the 2022 S90 T8 Recharge PHEV sedan, the changes are minor, but include a new Android-based infotainment with built-in Google and the front USB ports are changed from Type-A to Type-C. The sensors for the driver assistance functions are also upgraded. Mechanically, the Recharge range remains unchanged; however, the base T6 car gets a new 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain. The new base powertrain for the S90 is the B6 mild hybrid engine with standard all-wheel drive. Compared to the T6 powertrain of the 2021 model, the B6 produces a little less power and a little more torque. The mild hybrid system improves fuel economy, making the S90 quite efficient for a mid-size luxury sedan. The features of the optional packages are also slightly overhauled.

The exterior of the premium S90 sedan is typical Volvo – sleek, slightly conservative and expensive. The familiar grille, broad shoulders and large 19-inch wheels define the imposing appearance. The S90 PHEV is powered by a 2.0L direct injection turbocharged and supercharged engine paired with an electric motor that produces a combined output of 400 hp. and 472 lb-ft of torque, transmitted to either the front wheels, rear wheels or all four wheels. This engine is mated to an 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency is rated at (L/100 km): 8.3 city / 7.5 highway / 7.9 combined. The pure electric range is around 34 km.

The Recharge is only available as a fully loaded Inscription version, starting at $76,050. My tester, however, had a slew of options that bumped the price up to nearly $90,000, which is pretty steep. Additional options included luxuries such as: Lounge Package ($2,350) featuring massaging front seat, deluxe rear armrest, ventilated rear seat and climate package. Advanced Package ($1,850): With power trunk, head-up display and 360-degree camera. Stand-alone options included features such as rear air suspension with active Four-C chassis, Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, park assist driver and front and rear park assist, alloy wheels 20-inch 8-multi-spoke and more for a final tally of $89,550.

The cabin of the S90 exudes an air of imposing and impeccable luxury. Well crafted high quality interior materials, Nappa leather, ash wood inlays abound. There are full-size seats suitable for five adults. The front seats gain power-adjustable massaging front seats and memory settings for the driver’s seat as standard. Standout is Volvo Sensus’ easy-to-use infotainment system with well-arranged menus and crisp graphics. The cool Orrefors crystal shifter is a finishing touch, while the terrific sounding Bowers & Wilkins audiophile audio will blow your mind! Rear seat occupants have limo-like legroom, a huge center armrest and their own controls in addition to heated and cooled seats. Simply wonderful!

On the road, the supercharged and turbocharged engine stands out with a very smooth power curve since the compressor takes care of the low revs while the turbocharger takes over at high revs. Add the EV power capability on take-off and the seamless quietness and switch to the gasoline engine and it’s a very refined driving experience. Acceleration is quick and smooth and the S90 has exemplary handling. You can get around 34 kilometers of electric range before the gas engine kicks in.

The rear axle is powered by its own 87hp motor, and there are four different drive modes to choose from or let the computer decide. Pure mode keeps the S90 in full-EV mode if you have the juice. Hybrid mode optimizes fuel economy, and Power mode firms up suspension tuning, gasoline engine and EV motor utilization, and offers faster gear changes. Despite its weight and size, the S90 handles twisty roads and corners with effortless grace. It’s an extremely fun and entertaining car to drive, yet very relaxing to use. (Thanks Volvo massage seats!).

The Volvo S90 is a luxurious and practical premium vehicle – a good alternative to more fuel-guzzling SUVs or crossovers, but still offers a cavernous and versatile interior. Cons are few, the S90 is expensive when loaded with options and that’s about it. Fuel consumption is fair and you’ll need a proper level 2 charger to extract a decent charge time. Magnificent, rare, elegant, the Volvo S90 Recharge is a wonderful car to drive and own.
