High gas prices have many consumers giving up in frustration. Electric vehicles, or EVs, are a great alternative. Electric vehicles have better fuel economy compared to their gas-powered counterparts, not to mention the environmental benefits. Automakers are investing billions in electric vehicle technology, and many are committing to being all-electric in the coming years.
Among the newer electric vehicles on the market, some get better mileage than others. Let’s look at what MPGe is and the three electric vehicles with the best fuel economy rating.
First of all, what is MPGe?
If you’ve been researching electric vehicles, you’ve probably come across the term MPGe in your research. KBB explains that MPGe stands for Miles Per Gallon Equivalent. The standard calculation of mpg cannot be made when a battery-powered hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric vehicle uses electricity as a fuel source, as these vehicles do not use fuel exclusively (or at all) which can be measured in gallons.
The formula for MPGe can be calculated like this: 33.7 kWh of electricity = 1 gallon of gas. The miles per gallon formula is simpler and works like this: miles driven divided by gallons used = mpg. Another equally important factor for electric vehicles is the range rating. In other words, how far you can go between charges.
